The society of Waknuk have barely any memories of the old people and have only stories of what they could have done and what they have accomplished. That period is now referred to as "Tribulation" and this is this the time where sins must be paid for. Although this happened a long time ago, the society is still being cleansed of anything that doesn't follow or is conceived to be "the norm".
The story is centered around David Strorm, who comes from a stern religious family who lives by "the norm" and lives to obliterate anything outside of the norm, and his group of friends who all posses the ability to speak through mind shapes.
David's father, Joseph Strorm, who is considered to be a great leader in Waknuk made sure that he and his family were cleansed from sin, and even joking or wondering about having an extra arm or toe was not tolerated.
Anything that appeared to be not in the image of God was either destroyed or if were human deviants, banished to the Fringes to live out their days as an outcast.
David has been learning from young to "Watch thou for the mutant" but even at a tender age doesn't really understand what that really means until he met Sophie, the girl with six toes. She was physically not in the image so she and her family were soon enough banished to the fringes. Even his own aunt was forced to commit suicide because she gave birth to a child that was born with a physical defect and thus meant that it had to be taken away.
David is now concerned with his own safety now because he has realized that himself and a group of friends, including his infant sister, can all communicate using "mind shapes" or telepathy. This was not a physical defect but in fact would still cause a lot of trouble if ever found out. This concerned the group even more now as David's sister, Petra, too young to understand or even control her powers can easily let the secret out.
Ironically, they had to leave Waknuk and they were wanted and was even pursued by David's own father.
Petra was able to make contact with someone from the Sealanders and they have given hope to David and everyone with powers.
